Relationship of Cancer Stem Cells with Clinical Pathologic Factors, survivin and Ki67 in Colorectal Carcinoma

  • Objective To explore the expression of cancer stem cell marker CD133 and to elucidate its relationship with the clinicopathological factors, survivin and Ki67 in colorectal cancer tissues. Methods Expressions of CD133,survivin and Ki67 were detected by immunohistochemical method in 60 cases of colorectal carcinoma,para-cancerous and normal colorectal tissues. The correlations between the various indicators as well as the relationship between these indicators and clinicopathological factors including gender, age, site of primary mass, tumor size, histological grade, lymph node metastasis, invasive depth and pTNM stage were analyzed. Results The positive rate of CD133 was 50% in the 60 cases of colorectal cancer, which was significantly higher than that in para-cancerous and normal colorectal tissues (P<0.01).Expression of CD133 was significantly associated with lymph node metastasis and pTNM stages (P<0.01),and correlated with histological grades statistically(P<0.05),but not related to other clinicopathological parameters.Expression of survivin was only related to histological grades of tumor(P<0.05).No correlation between Ki67 and any clinicopathological parameters.Expression of CD133 was positively correlated with the expressions of survivin and Ki67(P<0.05 and P<0.01),respectively.Expression of survivin was also positively correlated with the expression of Ki67(P<0.01). Conclusion CD133+ tumor cells exist in colorectal cancer tissues.Cancer stem cells play an important role in the carcinogenesis and progreis of colorectal cancer. The expression of cancer stem cell marker CD133 may be useful for evaluating the malignancy and prognosis of colorectal carcinoma.
