Expression of STAT5 and c-myc in Colorectal Carcinoma and Its Clinical Significance

  • ObjectiveTo explore the expression of signal transducer and activator of transcription 5(STAT5) and c-myc in colorectal carcinoma(CRC) tissues and its correlation with clinicopathological features. MethodsProtein levels of STAT5 and c-myc in CRC(56 cases) and colorectal adenoma(16 cases) tissues were detected by immunohistochemistry method. ResultsThe positive rate of STAT5 in CRC (34/56, 60.7%) was higher than that in colorectal adenoma(3/16, 18.8%), P<0.01. STAT5 expression was related to Dukes stage and lymph node metastasis(P<0.05). The positive rate of c-myc in CRC (35/56, 62.5%) was also higher than that in colorectal adenoma(4/16, 25.0%), P<0.01. However, c-myc expression was not associated with differentiation degree, Dukes stage and lymph node metastasis(P>0.05). There was a positive correlation between the expression of STAT5 and c-myc in CRC (r=0.359,P<0.01). Conclusion STAT5 and c-myc play a role in the oncogenesis and development of CRC. STAT5 can be used to evaluate the biological behavior of CRC. The expression of c-myc is probably regulated by STAT5 in CRC.
