Abstract
ObjectiveTo investigate the characteristics of lung cancer in young patients and analyze the corresponding prognostic factors. MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed the clinical data from 60 cases of lung cancer, aged fewer than 40, diagnosed by pathology or cytology. Gender, age, smoking history, pathology, tumor location and size, TNM stage, familial cancer history and the choice of treatment were analyzed for their relationships to prognosis. The survival rate was calculated by Kaplan-Meier method and Log-rank test was used to compare the survival rate. Univariate and multivariate factors for survival were analyzed by Cox proportional hazards regression model. ResultsThe overall 1-,2-,and 3-year survival rates were 69.1%,50.0%and 20.0% respectively. Cox univariate analysis revealed that type of pathology, smoking history, TNM stage, the choice of treatment were prognostic factors. Cox multivariate analysis revealed that type of pathology, TNM stage were independent prognostic factors for young patients with lung cancer. ConclusionThe characteristics of lung cancer in 60 young patients had no specificity.Being aware of young cases of lung cancer, striving for an early correct diagnosis and choosing correct treatment would be the ways to improve survival rate.
