Abstract
Objective To investigate the prevalence of glutathione-S-transferase M1 (GSTM1) and T1 (GSTT1) gene polymorphism in hepatocellular carcinoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients in a high-risk area Guangxi. Methods The genotypes of GSTM1 and GSTT1 in 181 hepatocellular carcinoma and 126 nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients and 641 normal people were detected by duplicate PCR technique. Results The frequencies of GSTM1 and GSTT1null genotype in hepatocellular carcinoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma were more increased than that in control groups,65.2% and 61.9% vs. 47.6%, and 57.5% and 62.7% vs. 43.1%, respectively, P<0.01. Conclusion Prevalences of GSTM1 and T1 genes were polymorphic in hepatocellular carcinoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients in Guangxi. Individuals carried GSTM1-null or GSTT1-null would have an increased risk for hepatocellular carcinoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
