Expression of MUC18 and Its Correlation with Counts of Microvessel and Lymph Vessel in Laryngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma Tissues

  • Objective:To study the Expression Levels of MUC18 and the counts of MV and LV in the laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma tissues to detect their relation to the genesis and progression of laryngeal carcinoma. Methods :EnVision immunohistochemistry was usd for expression of MUC18 and SP immunohistochemistry for counts of MV and LV in routinely paraffin-embedded sections from the resected specimens with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (n=62), peri-carcinoma tissues (n=38), chronic laryngitis, and laryngeal papilloma (n=20). Results :The positive rates of MUC18 expression and the counts of MV and LV in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma were significantly higher than those in peri-carcinoma tissues and chronic laryngitis, laryngeal papilloma (P<0.01).The positive rate of MUC18 expression and the counts of MV and LV in well-differentiated laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma with the maximal diameter of mass<2cm,no-metastasis of lymphnode, and no-infiltration of regional tissues were significantly lower than those in the poor-differentiated laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma with the maximal diameter ≥2cm, metastasis of lymphnode, and infiltration of regional tissues (P<0.01).The counts of MV and LV in the supraglottic carcinoma cases were significantly higher were significantly higher than that in glottic carcinoma cases (P<0.01). Conclusion :The expressive levels of MUC18 and the counts of MV and LV might be important biological marker to determine the progression, metastatic status, invasive potential and prognosis of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma.MUC18 might have a promotive effect on angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma.
