Abstract:
With the ongoing advancements in radiotherapy technology, as well as the need to mitigate side effects and enhance cancer patients' quality of life, treatment-related side effects have garnered increasing attention. Due to the inherent radio-sensitivity of lymphocytes, when radiotherapy is administered, many patients exhibit lymphopenia. The anti-tumor efficacy of cell-mediated immunity, particularly by CD8+ T cells, may also be compromised. Radiotherapy-induced immunity activation can also go along with immunosuppression. However, a definitive consensus on the mechanisms and effects of radiation-induced lymphopenia remains elusive. This article provides an overview of the current research advancements with the aim of optimizing radiotherapy protocols and modalities to enhance the radiotherapy tolerance in cancer patients.
